The Path of Luminism

Luminism is a modern philosophy and religion of reason, compassion, and moral clarity. It teaches that goodness stands on its own… not on dogma, not on fear, and never on threat of divine punishment.

RoU 2/7: The Institute

[1] The Institute of Universal Studies, known simply as The Institute, is dedicated to studying the universe in all its aspects. Originally founded to safeguard and distribute knowledge, its primary mission was the creation of the Encyclopedia Universalis, a record of all that sentient minds have observed and discovered. But when the Men in Black (MIB) revealed themselves as enemies of truth, the Institute broadened its mission.

Knowledge alone was no longer enough, it had to be defended.

The Institute survives not through patronage or state sponsorship, but through self-sufficiency. Its greatest achievement, the tachyon transmission network, allows faster-than-light communication across civilizations. This network sustains the Institute financially, with revenue generated from transmission fees, maintenance contracts, and premium services. Live FTL communication is costly, but the demand is constant—from governments, merchants, universities, and individuals alike. Because no single empire funds it, no single empire controls it.

Independence is the Institute’s shield.

Beyond communications, the Institute also operates a universal broadcasting service:

  1. UNN – Universal News Network: breaking news and analysis.
  2. UHC – Universal History Channel: archives and lessons from civilizations past.
  3. UEM – Universal Economic Monitor: trade, markets, and interstellar finance.

Every universal standard day (26 hours), the Institute distributes a news packet freely accessible to anyone with a tachyon receiver. For countless colonists and travelers, this steady stream of knowledge is their lifeline to the wider universe.

The Federation itself partnered with the Institute, providing tachyon technology in exchange for guaranteed access and priority service. The Federation Navy, however, maintains its own secure channels. The arrangement preserves the Institute’s neutrality: it profits through cooperation, but answers to no single banner.

Once, the Institute’s largest campus was on Olympia, a vast orbital habitat in the Eleria system. When the MIB attacked and destroyed it, millions of volumes of data and memory were lost, burned from the ledger of the universe. The assault shocked the Federation into recognizing the scope of the threat, leading to formal collaboration with the Institute to prevent such devastation again.

The Section

In the aftermath of Olympia, the Institute created the Section, a covert division tasked with countering the MIB. It is not large, nor does it wield fleets. Its agents focus on intelligence, infiltration, and the quiet defense of knowledge. Their mandate is clear: no archive must ever burn so easily again.

Though the Institute maintains armed ships for security and defense against pirates and raiders, it has never been a military power. In crises, it calls on the Federation Navy. The Section’s existence is proof that the Institute learned a hard truth… knowledge without vigilance is fragile.

And so, the Institute endures.

It is not a weapon, but a beacon. A living testament that even in the shadow of erasure, light can be preserved if enough are willing to maintain it.

[1] Revelation of the Unraveling

These records speak not of heroes in dark suits, but of the opposite, shadows who seek to unmake everything. The Men in Black described here are no galaxy defenders, but ancient enemies from beyond our plane of reality. They are the architects of silence, manipulators of truth, and destroyers of knowledge.

This series unfolds in fragments, stitched together from what survived the Men in Black (MIB). They are reports, testimonies, transmissions, and memories. Each section is a glimpse into a greater conflict humanity never knew it survived, and the threat it never knew it faced.
